According to a new study published in the June 2015 Lancet Oncology Journal, patients treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), also known as stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) achieve better overall survival than surgery for early lung cancer. Findings from this study show that SBRT is at least equally effective to the current standard of care–invasive surgery.

What is SBRT
Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is highly focused radiation treatment that gives an intense dose of radiation concentrated on a tumor, while limiting the dose to the surrounding organs. This is an outpatient procedure that can be completed in just a few minutes. Side effects often are very mild and patients can usually return to full function the same day. This type of therapy usually requires only one to five sessions of therapy. SBRT has become a treatment of choice for many patients with limited volume tumors but for whom surgery may not be an optimal treatment. While SBRT is typically used to treat small, early stage tumors or isolated metastases, it can be used to treat many different types of cancer including; lung, brain, adrenal glands, spine and liver cancers.
