What is clinical research and why is it important?
Clinical research is an area of study focused on finding new treatments, better diagnostic tools, and improving ways to manage symptoms for different diseases or illnesses. Every drug, device, tool, and test used in healthcare was once a part of a clinical research study or trial. At DPN, we believe that research, innovation, and compassion intersect to deliver personalized, evidence-based care to our patients. Our research department and experienced team of clinical research professionals are dedicated to ensuring that mission holds true.
What is a clinical trial?
A clinical trial is a stage in the clinical research life cycle that involves human participants. Generally, the purpose of a clinical trial is to determine the effectiveness and safety of new medical interventions or devices.
What will be asked of me as a research participant?
Each clinical trial is different and will ask different things of you. Detailed information about a trial will be discussed with you during the consent process. The consent process will be completed by one of our clinical research coordinators and will include what a trial is for, what you will be doing on the trial, how long the trial is, and any risks and benefits to participating in the trial. Consenting to participate in a trial is completely voluntary and continues throughout your entire time on a trial. This means that you can decide to stop participating at any point for any reason without consequence.
Once initially consented, we begin determining if you are eligible to participate in the trial. The eligibility process varies for each trial, and your clinical research coordinator will be with you every step of the way. If you are found to be eligible for a trial, then you will be confidentially randomized and scheduled to begin completing trial procedures and treatments. If you are found not to be eligible for a trial, then our research team will notify you and/or your provider as soon as possible. Being ineligible for a specific trial does not necessarily mean you won’t be eligible for other trials. Always talk with your provider about your options.
How will I be protected as a participant?
At DPN, our team takes your participation in clinical research seriously and understands that protecting your safety and privacy is vital. Our team is regularly trained and certified in the most up-to-date safety and ethical regulations and adhere to those standards throughout every stage of a clinical trial. Our safety and ethical adherence are routinely assessed and monitored by several entities including an institutional review board, the trial sponsor, and clinical research professionals at DPN.
How do I get involved?
Your DPN provider might mention a clinical trial opportunity to you and provide some general information during a visit if they think you might be a good fit. If this occurs, then your provider will refer you to our research team and one of our clinical research coordinators will reach out to you directly.
